Pool Sanitizers

3 February 2021

Maintaining your swimming pool, cleaning is an essential part. To keep your pool clean and safe for swimming you should use at least one pool sanitizer. Every swimming pool is loaded with chlorine as it kills all the nasty contaminants in the water. It harsh for some people an allergic reaction to chlorine after a swim like burning eyes, Itchy skin, and brittle hair. But when a pool doesn’t have sufficient chlorine it starts to build up chloramines. Chloramine is a gaseous irritant which causes infamous chlorine”pool smell” itchy skin, red eyes, and respiratory issue. But some choices keeps your pool clean and to switch over chlorine free :

1) Swap out chlorine for another all-around sanitizer

2) Pair different sanitizing systems with low levels of chlorine taking a residual cleaning role.

So, here are the some of the pool sanitation option which is discussed and how they work so that you can decide which one is right for your swimming pool.

1) Bromine :

Bromine is quite similar to that of chlorine which is highly reactive halogen elements and powerful sanitizer and the only difference is due to their by-products. . It is a natural state that liquid evaporates easily at room temperature. When bromine reacts with the contaminants in the water, a bromine molecule is formed, which react with organic substances to eliminates germs and bacteria

Pros:

  1. Highly recommended sanitizer to use in hot tub and spa.
  2. It smells less pungent than chlorine.
  3. Suitable for all types of pool.
  4. Effective for disinfectant and algicide.
  5. It remains stable in chlorine in water temperature and is used for an indoor pool.

Cons:

  1. It costs greater expenses as a sanitizing agent for pool water.
  2. It is a weaker oxidizer than chlorine.
  3. It is not stabilized as effectively against UV light as chlorine.
  4. It is not UV resistant and does not work well when exposed to sunlight.
  5. It may give a slightly noticeable yellowish color to your pool.

2) Ozone Pool Purification

Ozone is an organic and unstable gas that is formed due to the collision between the free oxygen molecules an atom. It is powerful oxidants that destroy micro organism halts the accumulation of deposits in pipes and water systems and requires virtually no harsh chemicals. It is mainly manufactured by subjecting the oxygen molecules to a high-voltage ionization process or ultraviolet radiation.

Pros:

  1. It is 100 times stronger than chlorine but does not affect the Ph level of the pool.
  2. Reduce the chemical usage and acts more like a filter that never presents in pool water.
  3. Can be used on indoor and outdoor pools as it takes less time to clean the pool.
  4. It will remove the smell that comes with the pool.
  5. It enhanced water quality.

Cons:

  1. Can be harmful if the concentration is on the higher side.
  2. Less effective as it cannot contaminants eliminates in swimming pool.
  3. It does not produce much ozone.
  4. This system only works with ceramic and plastic piping.
  5. Higher cost to start up.

3) Pool Ionizer

It is another way to reduce chlorine consumption. The ionizer release all the heavy metal ion like silver and copper to kill all the microorganism present in pool water. There are two forms of ionizer

1) An electric ionizer that utilizes electricity to charge metal until they release ion

2) A mineral cartridge that utilizes the water flow through the mineral packet to release metal ions

Pros:

  1. It works in both indoor and outdoor pools.
  2. Sofer water Feeling.
  3. Less wear and tear pool equipment.
  4. Reduce chemical usage and control Algae.
  5. The cost of pool ionizer is less than the ozone system and has great value.
  6. It has better filtration which keeps the pool looking better for longer.
  7. It is safe for eyes and skin and harmless for humans and pets.

Cons:

  1. It has a slow process with the dispersion of copper and silver ions.
  2. It does not neutralize organic material like body oil, lotion pollen, and dirt.
  3. Ineffective oxidizer.
  4. Ionizers do not oxidize the swimming pool water.
  5. The monthly electricity bill may go up due to high consumption.

4) Pool UV System

It is the method of cleaning water using UV light that destroys chloramines and other toxic by-products of chlorine. It also kills micro organism and produces safer water for swimming, washing, and drinking without adding any further chemicals to the water. As other chemicals and chlorine can exacerbate asthma and allergies but this does not exist in the UV pool system.

Pros:

  1. It needs less maintenance than a chlorine cleansing system.
  2. It is easy to use and requires less monitoring.
  3. It does not damage the pool as it does not cause the chemical to build-up.
  4. Without chlorine odor and irritation, it produces clean water.

Cons:

  1. All UV system is not maintenance free forever.
  2. Sanitation happens while the water is under UV light.
  3. If UV light becomes less effective you need to replace it regularly to keep the pool clean.
  4. Due to lack of proper sanitation, the bacteria may come again.
  5. Not ideal for continuous sanitation.

Saltwater pool system:

Saltwater is an alternative to a chlorine pool but you don’t have to add chlorine to a saltwater pool. Majority of the pool owner like to use a saltwater system and it is the most and best commonly used type of pool. It is commonly found at hotels, resorts and cruise ships and can be installed in your own home. But some people find less harsh on their eyes, skin, and hair than a chlorinated pool.

Pros

  1. It doesnot need a chlorine tablet.
  2. You can hardly feel the chlorine smell.
  3. It is easy to maintain.
  4. It doesnot damage pool property like a swimsuit, towels, and other equipment.
  5. Saltwater is gentler on the skin.

Cons:

  1. Need large Initial expenses on build and replacement.
  2. Need manual handling, storage, and maintenance.
  3. It should be regularly checked for signs of erosion and buildup.
  4. Saltwater may harm nearby plants if they’re regularly exposed to it.
